I believe this quote is truly brilliant and really captures the essence of Quentin. He IS a distraught Alice in a haunted wonderland. Alice is submerged into a place that she does not know, where everything is unfamiliar to her. Just like Alice, Quentin is in the North, at Harvard, although he still has the quintessential Southern ideals at heart. He almost does not know how to act, and he is, for lack of a better term, distraught. It is a haunted wonderland, because the society is so unreal to him; it is so different from what he is used to in the south. Oh Quentin.
